bed-layout Raised Garden Bed DesignThe size and shape of your vegetable beds will to an extent be controlled by the shape and space available in your back yard or garden area. The most standard bed shape is a rectangle, but don’t feel that you need to limit yourself to that. Beds can be any shape as long as they maximize the space you have available to its full potential. A few design guidelines to consider are:

A bed should be at the least three foot by three foot. This is the minimum size needed for your vegetables to establish a mini climate just above the soil. This base size is also important for the development of micronutrients below the soil as well.

You should not walk on a bed after it has been built to avoid re-compacting the soil. So you will need to be able to reach into all parts of your bed from your path. Five feet is pretty standard for most people. Also the length of your bed should be 20-30 feet long to make getting around them easier.

You should not waste available space on wide garden paths. The best width is one foot wide. This narrow width will also help in establishing a good mini climate, conserving water and humidity levels.

In laying out your beds you should if possible go for a square layout over a rectangular one. The square arrangement will conserve moisture and promote a better ecosystem.  Beds laid out in rectangular shapes will dry out faster than the square.

Once you have created your garden plan and laid it out, continue to use the same layout and position each year.  This will ensure that the fertilization and soil improvements you do each year will give you continuing benefits each year.
