pH and alkalinity are related but they not the same.

A pH of 8 is not necessarily 1000 times more alkaline, (could be more) than a pH of 5. Alkalinity includes buffering salts whereas pH does not.

To be accurate a pH of 5 has 10 to the -5 power of free hydrogen ions per litre there as a pH of 8 has 10 to the -8 power of free hydrogen ions per litre. That is 1,000 times less hydrogen ions per litre.

I planted summer squash on mounds. The plants were beautiful and I had just began to pick squash 6 to 8 inchs long. The leaves turned yellow and the squash began to rot at about 3 inches. The buds are turning brown and rotting also. Help please. We live on the Florida/Georgia line and it is sandy and hot.
