Cress should not be overlooked simply as a nippy garnish. Upland or curly cress (small, parsleylike plants) grows easily and rapidly from seeds sown outdoors in cool weather. Watercress prefers wet feet and will thrive along a stream or pond bank where the water remains cool. Sow the seeds about 6 inches above the water line. Watercress can also be grown in pots of soil partly submerged in a large container of water after the seeds have sprouted indoors or outdoors.
In containers
Try growing cress indoors in a shallow tray. Sprinkle seeds on wet cheesecloth that has been spread on top of potting mix. Keep the cheesecloth moist and sticking to the soil surface. Snip seedlings to use in 10 to 14 days.
