Dig two holes 12 inches apart & 12 inches deep |

Fill each hole with water, and measure the depth of water. After one hour re-measure both holes and record the depth. Do this for two hours and three hours. Add together each of the six readings for inches lost and divide by 6. |

Water in well drained soil should drain about one inch per hour. If the water drained faster the soil is excessively draining. Continue to check hole until all the water has drained. If it takes longer than eight hours it is a sign of poor soil drainage. |
